Making a Monster Truck
|
Sunday 12th July 98
With this, the last day of the Bloomsburg show the drivers where
able to push their trucks to the limits.
John & I where both up fairly early on the last day of the show
& after getting showered it was time to get
some breakfast & chat to people along the way. On the way to
get some breakfast John managed to gain
a new sponsor. After stopping at one of the stands, & after
some major talking, John gained Cellular One
as a sponsor for his Sudden Impact truck.
With the truck needing new bump stops on the front & rear, and
with the front sway bars needing to be fixed
back on after John broke them off during freestyle, John & his
crew soon had the truck back ready to race.
With John spending some time with his wife looking around the show,
I met up with an American friend of mine & his friends, &
had another look around the show, pointing out trucks, that had caught
his eye.
With the morning just flying by, it wasn't long before the drivers
had to get suited up, & move their trucks into the infield for the
last time of the weekend.
For myself who was suffering from being in the sun to much, being
out in the infield where there is no shade, was making me feel not to good.

For John he lost in the first round of both the Chicago style &
straight line racing, making his racing weekend at
Bloomsburg, not a great one.
" I had a great time racing this weekend. I didn't do as well
as I had hoped, but it was a pleasure just being asked by Special Events
to come & race. Next year I'll have a better setup on the truck, &
a new body."
With the racing over, it was time for the drivers to move their trucks
out of the infield, & load them up into the trailers.
John gave me a ride in Sudden Impact, as he drove it back to the
trailer.
From inside the cab
As we drove out of the infield, crowds of people watched as we drove
by. As the trucks only have one seat for the driver, I had to sit on part
of the roll cage, & held on tight as directly below me was a hole where
you climb in &
out of the cab.

For some of the Monster Truck teams, they where quick to get packed
up, as they had a long journey ahead of them. For John & his team,
they had both Sudden Impact & Eradicator to load up. With Eradicator
being over the other side of the fairgrounds on display, John was quick
to set to work on Sudden Impact, so by the time that was finished, the
crowds of people would be less. This would be easier to maneuver
Eradicator over to the trailer.
John removes the tire.
Sometimes things don't always go to plan ! While John was removing the
back right tire, the truck slipped off of the jack. No damage was done to the truck.
John had to place blocks of wood under the axle & re-jack
the truck up.
John takes extra care in jacking the front of the truck up.
As the truck fell off of the jack, the trucks frame caught John on his
left shoulder, leaving John in pain.
Andy Slifko gets some ice for Johns arm.
With the tires taken off both Sudden Impact & Eradicator, the last
thing to do was roll the tires into the trailer & then load the truck
in.

With the trucks all loaded up, John freshened up, then had to sort out
his fee from Special Events, & get back his un-sold merchandise pictures
& money from the ones which had been sold.
For me it was a chance to say good bye to friends that I'd met,
& get the weekends results from the officials.
With that all done, it was time for us to hit the road, & travel
back to the Home of Sudden Impact & Eradicator.
On the way back we drove past the garage to the Thunder Chicken
& Gang Green Monster Trucks. The Thunder Chicken truck, sits there
with it's small transport tires on, & is no longer used.
Once back at the shop John & Andy unloaded their trucks &
then went home for the night.
